The National Hospital Insurance Fund (NHIF) saga got more interesting
yesterday, after sources close to Medical Services Minister Prof Anyang Nyong'o
revealed that the minister wired Sh 900 million to his personal offshore
account in Jersey Island.
The transaction of the money was done in Co-operative Bank Nairobi where
money was drawn from NHIF account and transferred to Prof Nyong’o bank account
in Jersey Island.
The amount was transferred on March 12 where a total of Sh...
560 million was
wired, followed by a second transaction on March 19 of Sh340 million. The two
transactions amount to Sh 900 million.
The money is part of Sh 1.2 billion that NHIF was to release to health
service providers across the country for the first three months of this year.
It is important to note that most politicians in Africa and in particular
Kenya have offshore accounts in Jersey and Virgin islands because their
jurisdictions are lenient on illegal money. These two areas are a safe haven
for money launderers.
